Catholic Social Teaching

Oftentimes, Christians lack formation in the social teaching of the Church that can inform their consciences and provide a framework for response to social issues of concern. JHC, in collaboration with Hekima College, began this programme following numerous requests from Catholics and other social groups for training and formation in Catholic Social Teachings.

Hence the Catholic Social Teaching Manual for Africa (CSTMA) provides a contextual interpretation tool towards an informed action.

The programme is carried out in two phases:

Composition of a manual for formation in Catholic Social Teachings (CST). The manual provides a relevant tool for Christians and people of good will to reflect on the guiding principles and directives of CST in relation to social actions for peace and justice in Africa for Christians and people of good will from all sectors of the society in Africa.

Conducting Awareness Workshops (CST-AW) and CST Training of Trainers (CST-TOT) with an aim of drawing on CST to reflect and act on social, political, economic and ethical matters that affect people in their daily lives. The training workshops aim at formation of a critical mass of persons who can in their turn use knowledge and analytical skills acquired to train others further and put CST into action.

There is a positive response to formation and training in Catholic Social Teachings, giving a clear indication that there was indeed a need to learn the principles and values of CST in decision making and transformation of the society.

Target Group

The training workshops reached out to most of the groups that had been targeted by the project. These include justice and peace group members from parishes, religious and seminarians in houses of formation, community leaders, teachers, students and youth, as well as pastoral agents.  The table below gives more details of the project in the last six months.
